Roofline and exterior areas inspected for rodent entry points

Key takeaways

  • American Canyon incorporated in 1992 and has roughly tripled since. Most homes are newer subdivisions, and newer has never meant sealed
  • The city sits between Napa River wetlands on the west and Newell Open Space foothills on the east
  • What gets called mice in west-side garages is usually rats off the water. Droppings tell the difference
  • Seal every opening. Traps remove the rodents inside

Rats or mice in your home?

Scratching in the attic of your American Canyon home?

Norway rats push in at ground level off the wetlands on the west side. Roof rats and mice work the rooflines and garages. We check both levels, so the estimate covers how they are getting in.

Why do American Canyon homes get rats and mice?

American Canyon incorporated in 1992 on the old Napa Junction settlement, and has roughly tripled since. Watson Ranch is still adding homes on the old cement plant ground. Nearly everything here is subdivision housing from the 1990s onward, along Highway 29. What those homes back onto is the point: Napa River wetlands on the west, and the Sulphur Springs foothills and Newell Open Space Preserve on the east. The rodents were there first.

Think you have mice? It may be rats.

On the west side, droppings in garages get called mice by default, and they are usually rats off the water. Norway rats work the wetlands and creeks at ground level, and garages are their first stop. Droppings give them away: about a quarter inch and pointed means mice, about half an inch means rats. Mice are here too, and roof rats work east-side rooflines. We identify the animal, then seal ground and roofline openings either way.

How do the wetlands and foothills squeeze the town?

Most cities we serve have one habitat edge. American Canyon has two. West of Highway 29, American Canyon Creek and Walsh Creek drain to the Napa River marshes, and that wet ground holds Norway rats year round. East of town, the Newell preserve and foothills hold roof rats. A house can take ground pressure from the creek side and roof pressure from the preserve side in the same season. We start at the edge your house faces.

Are newer subdivisions actually sealed against rodents?

No. Tract work repeats the same vent screens, stucco junctions, garage seals, and roof transitions house after house, so the same openings repeat down the street. Those screens and seals age on the same schedule, so a 2005 subdivision starts opening up all at once. Tile roofs here give roof rats covered travel across the roof. Newer building changes which openings we expect, not whether there are openings.

Does construction nearby push rodents into finished streets?

Yes. Watson Ranch is building about 1,200 homes on the old cement plant ground, and smaller projects are filling the edges. Grading pushes out rodents living on that ground, and the nearest shelter is the finished street next door. Homeowners near active building often see activity for the first time then.

What about the older Napa Junction-era homes?

The middle of town holds homes from before incorporation: older foundations, detached garages, and additions from several decades. Those homes get the high and low check, with extra time on seams where additions meet the original build. That junction usually decides the entry list.

What does an American Canyon rodent inspection include?

The inspection is free, and same-week inspections are available in most cases. We check the roofline, attic, garage, and outside, starting from the habitat edge the house backs onto. You see what we find and get a written estimate. Our order is seal first, then trap rodents still inside. We do not use poison. Call (707) 754-2408.

What we check first in American Canyon

We start with whichever habitat the house backs onto: the creek and wetland side on the west, where ground-level openings matter most, or the preserve side on the east, where fences and rooflines carry roof rats in. Older Napa Junction-era homes in the middle of town get the full high and low check.

Do you provide rat and mouse removal and rodent proofing in American Canyon, CA?+

Yes. We serve American Canyon, at the south end of the Napa Valley. We inspect, seal, and trap throughout the city. Same-week inspections are available in most cases. Call (707) 754-2408 for a free inspection.

We just bought a newer home. Can it really have rats?+

Yes. Newer subdivisions repeat the same vents, seals, and junctions house after house, and those openings are there from the first year. Here they also sit against wetlands and foothills, so pressure reaches new homes fast.

There is construction going up near us. Does that push rodents into our street?+

Often, yes. Grading pushes rodents off open ground, and finished homes next door are the nearest shelter. If you hear new activity while building is active nearby, sealing now keeps them from settling in.

Our house backs onto the creek or the wetlands. What does that change?+

It moves the starting point to ground level. Wetland edges hold Norway rats year round, and they enter at garage corners and foundation gaps first. We still check the roofline, but low openings need the same care.

How much does rodent proofing cost in American Canyon?+

It depends on the openings your home has. The inspection is free, with a written estimate before work begins, so you know the cost up front.

The Integrity Process

Our 4-Step Rodent Proofing Process

Inspect. Proof. Clean Up. Follow Up. We inspect the whole home, seal the entry points, clean and sanitize on the same visit, then set traps and keep coming back until the house stays quiet.

01

Rodent Inspection

The inspection is free, and it is where every job starts. Our inspector checks the attic, roofline, garage, crawlspace when there is one, and the full outside of the home, tracing droppings and runways back to the openings rats and mice are using. He takes photos of what he finds, and the inspection becomes a written estimate with a report and map our crew works from.

02

Rodent Proofing

Our crew works from the inspector's report and map, sealing every entry point rats and mice are using, and the ones they could use next. We seal with construction grade materials.

03

Rodent Clean-Up & Sanitation

Clean-up is its own step, but it happens on the same visit as the proofing, while the crew is already there. Where it is accessible, we remove droppings, nesting material, damaged insulation, plastic vapor barrier, and heat duct insulation, then sanitize and deodorize the areas we cleaned. Damaged materials go back new and up to code, and we protect the inside of the home while we work.

04

Follow-Up & Trap Checks

After the proofing, we come back every 3-5 days until there is zero activity. At each visit we check the traps and re-inspect the sealing, looking for any new opening or fresh sign that rats or mice are still moving. Once the traps stay empty and the house stays quiet, we take the traps out and the job is done.
